☆ Cole's 21st Birthday ☆
Hello!
Welcome back to all our loyal blog-readers! We are Siri, Signe, Mer and Uvin and this is what our day looked like today!
To begin, it was our dearest Cole's 21st birthday today! We celebrated with a day trip to Eger, Hungary. Our favorite capricorn had a very busy birthday involving a science museum, a three-course Hungarian lunch and the Beatles museum!
The morning began with an early train ride out of the city. Though we love the city, it's nice to see a little Hungarian countryside every once in a while and today's train views did not disappoint! As always, us students are taking this opportunity to get some homework done and chat about math.
After a 2 hour train ride, we walked from the train station to a university in the heart of Eger. The building doubles as an interactive science museum with lots of fun activities. The experience reminded us of visiting the Minnesota Science Museum as kids, which was delightful. My personal favorite activity was a dark room with a small window and mirror mechanism at the top that allowed us to project a view of the city on a blank table. I still don't fully understand how it works, but it sure was cool!
The group had a three-course lunch that included some traditional Hungarian dishes, such as a side of pickles alongside the meal. Because I (Siri) am pescatarian, I can't eat many of the meat-focused dishes of Hungarian cuisine. Instead, I had a beautiful fish that still had every part of its body (including its eyeballs). I always enjoy having a staring contest with my meal 😋
Our meal included a tasting of Hungarian wine! Though I don't love wine, this Hungarian delicacy was pretty yummy. Plus, our resident wine expert and favorite program assistant Brandon said it was good and we trust him. Full from our delicious lunch, we got to briefly visit the ruins of a castle. The sun was setting as we explored, making for a beautiful (but chilly) time to walk about.
Our last activity of the day was held a secret from students until we arrived. Emese (our tour guide and Hungarian teacher) had previously described it as "visiting a crazy man's house". Who would not be intrigued?? Our surprise activity took everyone by immense surprise! It was... (drum roll please)...
The Beatles Museum!!! What do the Beatles have to do with Eger, Hungary you might ask? To quote our mega-Beatles-fan tour guide, "nothing great happens without Hungary's involvement". Apparently, the band's first photographer was Hungarian. The museum had some wild decor! You could find everything from Beatles Guitar Hero to a $3,000 strand of John Lennon's hair.

On the train ride home, we worked on our math homework. Spending every hour of every day with your classmates can be very helpful when we're all working on the same homework. Pictured below is a very common sight in our homework time: one student trying to explain their answer while their peers gather eagerly around their paper. Something I particularly love about this trip is our shared love for math. We have a very supportive and excited group that can get pretty rowdy over a math problem.
